Being safe as a fan of an artist...
I have worked with artists for over 11 years now...
Once in a while I discuss with them what they should focus on in their social networking accounts, especially Facebook. A lot of artists don't moderate tags in their photos or comments to their posts. A lot of people go through personal profiles of artists and their celebrity pages and use them for making their own accounts more popular.
This includes adding links to fan and scam profiles and external websites pretending to offer something useful in exchange for asking some insignificant-sounding personal details. This also includes adding tags of random people to every single photo posted on either the artist's personal profile or the verified celebrity page.
What people don't know is that a lot of their information is also shared with everyone tagged in a photo that they liked or commented on. Other people can use the information they got for sending unsolicited e-mails to all the people mentioned on your public posts or your profile details. In worst case this open possibility for hackers to use the information for identity theft in countries where associating citizen identification number or social security number with a matching name is not rocket science.
What artists don't know is by not moderating their social networking pages and allowing possible fans to befriend with their personal profiles they are putting their real fans at risk and risking their own credibility when they get associated with being medium of unsolicited advertising and criminal activity by a third-party they didn't even consider being a liability.
